Simulate Fujifilm X-T4 colors

Good news here! With Lightroom + PerfeFilm X-T4 color profiles you can simulate Fujifilm X-T4 colors using arbitrary cameras! This article will evaluate the accuracy of Fujifilm X-T4 simulation and compare the original color profile with PerfeFilm color profiles using cross-brands cameras.

Test Environment

Cameras

• In this article, we used four APS-C cameras, which are Fujifilm X-T4, Fujifilm S5pro, Canon 90D and Nikon D7000. The four cameras were tested under the same scene, with the same shooting angle, using the same white balance, and the same exposure. The finished photos were compared with PerfeFilm X-T4 for Lightroom and original Fujifilm X-T4 camera color in the same shooting environment.

Lenses

• We used the same lens, Nikon 85mm/f1.8 G, in order to achieve the same framing range, focal length, and the same aperture for all four cameras. Since the Fujifilm S5pro and Nikon D7000 both use Nikon mounts, this 85mm lens can be mounted directly, while the Fujifilm X-T4 and Canon 90D use this Nikon 85mm/f1.8 G lens with an additional adapter ring.

Basic settings

• White balance is fixed in daylight mode, iso: 160, Fujifilm Dynamic Range 100, aperture shutter and exposure are the same. Note: The Fujifilm X-T4's DR100 mode is turned on only when ISO 160 or higher is used, so ISO 160 is selected instead of ISO 100. The Fujifilm X-T4 uses firmware version 1.20 for camera body conversion.  **All color modes are set to default.

Lightroom Settings

• All comparing cameras use the same PerfeFilm color profiles and presets. Each camera has different exposure and saturation even with the same basic settings due to CMOS differences and different color temperature calculations. For calibrating the mismatch of those fundamental differences, we only adjust the exposure, color temperature, and saturation to match colors in Lightroom, and not adjust any single color setting.

PerfeFilm X-T4 Color Profile Review

The following color comparison was performed using two cameras + three different color processing methods. The following simulates the Fujifilm X-T4 Astia, Velvia, Provia, Eterna Bleach Bypass, ACROS, Classic Negative, and other color modes. The comparison graphs from left to right are Fujifilm X-T4 + original camera color, Fujifilm X-T4 + PerfeFilm simulation, and other camera models + PerfeFilm simulation.

Asita

Astia is a long-discontinued Fujifilm positive film. I used Astia back in the old days. The feature of this film is the warm and smooth skin color, which is very suitable for portrait photography. As you can see from the comparison photos, the color provided directly from Fujifilm X-T4 camera is almost the same as the PerfeFilm X-T4 color, while the Nikon D7000, after applying the PerfeFilm profile, is quite the same as the Fujifilm X-T4 in terms of skin color and clothing color. The only difference is that the red color is more saturated than the Fujifilm X-T4 one, but the difference is not significant.

High Saturation Test

The following is the high saturation comparison photos, we can see that the colors of Fujifilm X-T4 and PerfeFilm X-T4 are almost the same, while the high saturation magenta of Fujifilm S5pro photo has a slight color difference in brightness, but the difference is very small.

Velvia

 Velvia color is Fujifilm's most famous landscape positive, known for its high saturation and vibrant skin tones. In the test images, it appears that the Velvia color of the Fujifilm X-T4 camera body, Fujifilm X-T4 using PerfeFilm X-T4 Velvia profile, and Canon 90D using PerfeFilm X-T4 Velvia color are very close to each other. From the plush red of the back of the chair to the indigo blue of the clothes are almost identical. The skin tones of those three photos are very similar, too.

Provia

Provia is Fujifilm's standard positive, which is widely used in various scenes. It has good performance in true color reproduction. The test scenes were taken with flowers that have high saturation and gradation in color, so that the accuracy and color continuity of color gradation and high color saturation could be tested. From the test photos, there is basically no difference between the PerfeFilm Provia and the original camera, and the color continuity and dark shadows are quite similar. But what was really interesting was that when we shot the same scene with the Fujifilm S5pro and applied the PerfeFilm Provia profile, the color tones and color continuity were very similar to those of Fujifilm X-T4.

Eterna Bleach Bypass

Eterna Bleach Bypass is a new negative effect recently added by Fujifilm, which simulates the low saturation effect created by the Bleach Bypass process and is suitable for scenes with cool colors. The test environment consists of small ornaments in the claw machine. The light inside the machine has low color temperature because of the fluorescent lamps or energy-saving lamps. The test photos show that the colors of the original camera Fujifilm X-T4 with the Bleach Bypass and PerfeFilm Bleach Bypass are quite consistent, but the colors of the Fujifilm S5pro with the PerfeFilm profile are slightly different. We adjusted the S5pro color by pulling down the saturation a bit, and it looks almost similar.

ACROS

The Fujifilm ACROS black and white negative mode has rich grayscale and fine grain details. As you can see from the comparison, Nikon D7000 can almost perfectly restore the ACROS smooth black and white negative effect to the same scene of the totem pole colors and model skin color.

Classic Negative

Classic Negative is suitable for street photography and portraits, it will give the photo a nostalgic negative film feeling, the saturation is also lower, and there will be a "pleasantly" dirty color. The comparison shows that Canon 90D + PerfeFilm Classic Negative can perfectly restore FujiFilm X-T4 original Classic Negative colors in the model's skin, the gold chair in the back, the blue qipao and the red velvet color in the background.

Asita + Soft Tone

Astia color are suitable for portraits, but the contrast is slightly higher than normal. Use PerfeFilm's Portrait Tone for smoother skin, ideal for fashion portraits where facial detail and skin tone are important.

Eterna Bleached Bypass+ Film Tone

The low saturation mode of Eterna Bleached Bypass is very suitable for street photography and portraits, and it is quite suitable for the cool tones of the cities. Adding PerfeFilm Film Tone can increase the contrast of shadows and add the tonality of the negative, which is quite suitable.

Velvia + Landscape Tone

Velvia colors give landscape photography a saturated and warm tone, so of course you need to use PerfeFilm Landscape, which can increase the brightness of the dark areas and make the saturation and brightness of the whole picture more balanced.
